With each year, the Heartland Dart Championships has grown at a stellar pace and this year was no different, in fact this year's event weekend saw a surge in participation. The event, which has been known as a great weekend of fun and travel is quickly becoming known for competition and friendship as well. The 2016 Heartland Dart Championships was held April 15th-17th, 2016 in Grand Island, Nebraska. This year's events saw nearly 250 entries from all over the State of Nebraska competing in the events...a number that pushed the limits of their current venue, Captain Jack's Bar inside the Super Bowl FEC. Luckily, a larger venue has been secured for the upcoming years, which will allow the event to continue growing and improving upon what they have already accomplished. This tournament is open to all league players across the State of Nebraska and hopes that it will some day grow into a version of a State tournament, giving a weekend event for players of all skill levels and leagues a place to compete and socialize with one another. The Heartland Dart Championships is an event weekend hosted, ran and promoted by Mid-NE Coin of Grand Island and co-promoted with Greater Omaha Leagues of Omaha, Nebraska. It is an annual event held the week before NDA's Team Dart, many players using this weekend as a warm-up for Team Dart. The Heartland Dart Championships features Men's & Women's Singles, Men's & Women's Doubles, Mixed Doubles, Mixed Triples and new this year was Junior Singles. Sunday April 24th, 2016 marked a very eventful day for the Plattsmouth VFW #2543 as two dozen pool players from around the region marched in to claim the inaugural King of Cass County 8-ball Championship!
The venue was unsure of what the turnout may be with the weather nice and other conflicting events, but needless to say they were extremely happy with the outcome of their first installment of the event. As always, there were things to improve on, but those improvements will be made and next year will be bigger and better. 2016 King of Cass County 8-Ball Champion: Dave Davis, Beaver Lake, Nebraska Runner-Up: Gabe Record, Plattsmouth, Nebraska 3rd Place: Sonny Seyler, Plattsmouth, Nebraska Two of the coaches of Greater Omaha Leagues' Junior National Dart team, known as the "Wolfpack", have come up with an interesting way to raise money to help fund the team's trip back to the 2016 NDA Junior National Championships. The two coaches, Matt Winters, of Plattsmouth and Gabe Ahlers, of Louisville have laid out a challenge to the supporters of the team.
If supporters can help the team raise $300.00 before May 14th, 2016 the two coaches have agreed to shoot in the team's May 21st fundraiser Luck of the Draw while wearing make-up. To set an even higher goal, the coaches have said if at least $500.00 is raised they will shoot in that same tournament, but with dresses and shaven legs added to the ensemble. The team's May 21st event is their last big push towards the goal needed to send the team fully funded back to the NDA Junior tournament in Bloomington, Minnesota this Summer. The event will feature the aforementioned Luck of the Draw dart tournament, a BBQ cookout with meals available for purchase, 50/50 raffle drawings and prize raffle drawings. The event will be held at the team's sponsored home location; the Fraternal Order of Eagles #365 in Plattsmouth, Nebraska. This will be the "Wolfpack's" second trip to the NDA Junior National tournament, which was also held in Bloomington, Minnesota last year. Last year, the Wolfpack consisted of Chance Taylor, Kole Gray, Dallas Winters and Trent Record with coaches Steve Garrean Jr. & Matt Winters. Chance Taylor left last year's event with two Junior National Championships; Kole Gray also returned as a National Champion, Dallas Winters finished with a National Runner-up & Winters and Record finished with a 3rd place medal in a Doubles event. The team definitely set the bar high last year, but expects similar results from this year's team; which has expanded. The Wolfpack now consists of several more players and twice as many coaches. The coaches said that this year's journey back to the Nationals has been tough, but they expect the end result to be worth every minute. They are already scouting for potential members of next year's team...most of their scouting process takes place during the Summer's Tuesday night Adult/Youth Doubles league held at the Eagles in Plattsmouth, Nebraska. |
